KMPDC slams hospital over baby detention, calls it a breach of trust

The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) has condemned Abyan Hospital in Nairobi for detaining a baby over an unpaid medical bill, calling the incident a breach of trust.

KMPDC confirmed it had launched an investigation and transferred the child to Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital (KUTRH) for continued care.

In a statement on July 30, Chief Executive Officer David Kariuki described the hospital’s conduct as a violation of healthcare ethics and public trust.

“The detention of patients, especially children, goes against the principles of compassionate and professional healthcare delivery,” noted Kariuki.

He added that KMPDC was working with relevant authorities to ensure those responsible are held accountable.

“We have taken swift action to move the child and begin a thorough probe. Anyone found responsible will face the law,” explained Kariuki.

The incident occurred at Abyan Hospital in Eastleigh. Details of the outstanding bill were not disclosed.

Kariuki urged health facilities countrywide to prioritise patient safety and uphold trust in the healthcare system.

“Facilities must put safety first. Detaining vulnerable patients cannot be tolerated,” observed Kariuki.

KMPDC is mandated to regulate the practice of medicine and dentistry in Kenya and to ensure compliance with standards of care.
