Mulanya calls for protection of girls, warns youth against misuse of social media

Nambale Member of Parliament Geoffrey Mulanya has called for the protection and empowerment of girls, urging the community to prioritise the education and safety of girls to ensure a better future.

Speaking during the commissioning of a new 300-capacity dormitory at Elwanikha Girls Secondary School, Mulanya said girls in the community remain more vulnerable and deserve equal protection and opportunities as boys.

“Our girls face many challenges in our community. Some are denied further education by their parents immediately after completing their first level of studies. We must understand that the rights of girls and boys are equal, and all children deserve protection,” said Mulanya.

The MP raised concerns over rising insecurity in Nambale Sub-County, citing the influence of disco matanga and illicit alcohol, which he blamed for negatively impacting the youth.

He urged residents to support the current administration, adding that working with the government of the day was crucial in bringing development to the region.

“The president has brought development to our place because we agreed to work together. I urge you to support your leaders so they can lobby for more development that will benefit our people,” he said.

Mulanya also warned youth against being used by politicians to cause chaos during events, saying such actions hinder community progress.

“There is an emerging trend of youth being hired to disrupt functions. This must stop. I urge our young people to resist being misused by politicians,” he cautioned.

The MP also advised the youth to be mindful of their conduct on social media, warning that reckless online behaviour could harm their future prospects.

“We are in a digital age. Employers are now checking online behaviour before offering jobs. Don’t allow your social media history to deny you opportunities,” he said.

On his part, Nambale Sub County Assistant County Commissioner Okoth Wendo emphasised the need for collective responsibility in improving education in the region.

“Let us all, parents, teachers, students, and the entire community, come together to support academics. When we create a conducive environment, our children will thrive,” said Wendo.
